Since 1673 when Father Jacques Marquette and Louis Jolliet portaged through the territory that is now Chicago, water transportation has been vital to the city's growth. He has written for the Chicago Tribune and has taught American history at the University of Illinois at Chicago, Roosevelt University, and St. Xavier College. He lives in Chicago.
