About Thomas Docherty
Thomas Docherty found reading and writing really difficult as a child, so he ended up keeping a sketchbook diary, especially if he travelled somewhere new. That was the inspiration for his first picture books To the Beach and Little Boat. He lives in Swansea with his wife, who also writes children's books, and their two young daughters.
Reviews for To the Beach
This picture book will appeal to young children from 2-5 years old and especially to those who like to daydream. Author and illustrator, TD's own love of travel is reflected in this story of a kid who gazes out of the window .... Richly imagined and brought alive through the author's beautiful illustrations.
Sommerset Life
"This adventure book shows exactly how powerful one's imagination can be. Not all this summer's vacations have to be real, you know!"
Winston-Salem Journal
"A picture book that could be especially consoling to children this cloudy summer."
New York Times Book Review
A picture book that could be especially consoling to children this cloudy summer. A boy looks out a nondescript window into rain-but he's wearing a snorkel and cheerfully tells us he's taking his bucket, flippers and "big yellow inner tube"to the beach (the inner tube makes an inviting cutaway on the cover). The appearance of an airplane and a friendly camel as the story gets rolling situates us in his imagination, where the dunes stretch on like a desert toward the sea. Docherty's watercolors give a nice comic touch, but they reserve the rpost beauty and simplicity for the scenes of home.
