Description for The Legitimacy of the Middle Ages: On the Unwritten History of Theory
Paperback. A collection of theoretical essays arguing that theorists of modernity must reckon with the medieval, which is not, as some have asserted, completely separate or different from the modern. Editor(s): Cole, Andrew; Smith, D. Vance. Series: Post-Contemporary Interventions. Num Pages: 288 pages. BIC Classification: DSBB. Category: (UP) Postgraduate, Research & Scholarly. Dimension: 231 x 156 x 18. Weight in Grams: 412.
This collection of essays argues that any valid theory of the modern should—indeed must—reckon with the medieval. Offering a much-needed correction to theorists such as Hans Blumenberg, who in his Legitimacy of the Modern Age describes the "modern age" as a complete departure from the Middle Ages, these essays forcefully show that thinkers from Adorno to Žižek have repeatedly drawn from medieval sources to theorize modernity. To forget the medieval, or to discount its continued effect on contemporary thought, is to neglect the responsibilities of periodization.

Reviews for The Legitimacy of the Middle Ages: On the Unwritten History of Theory
“[This] volume opens a productive channel to yet another way of thinking about history – in this case, the history of our discipline, its philosophical underpinnings, and the contributions of medieval thought and medievalism generally to practices of cultural and textual analysis. . . . [T]his volume represents an endeavor of considerable intellectual significance, a strong opening into a set ... Read more
