About Filiberto Agusti
Richard Schaffer is professor emeritus of business law (retired) in the finance department at Walker College of Business, Appalachian State University. He has taught business law, international business law and transactions, and the law of international trade and investment. Professor Schaffer received his Juris Doctor degree from the University of Mississippi and his LL.M. degree from New York University. From 1976 through 1982 he assisted United Nations agencies in New York, San Jose and Vienna, with projects examining the relationship between corrupt practices, the abuse of power, and socio-economic development, and he served as rapporteur of UN working groups on international economic crime. Schaffer was Director of International Business Studies at ASU and the founder of its international business and business study abroad programs. In the 1980s he consulted and spoke frequently as an advocate for the internationalization of the business school curriculum. It was during the University of San Diego School of Law�s Institute on International and Comparative Law, Paris, 1982, that the original concept for this book was outlined and draft materials first developed. Since his retirement from teaching, he has worked in the international home textile industry on global sourcing, customs and trade matters. Filiberto Agusti was a partner in the international law firm of Steptoe & Johnson, LLP, where he practiced law for over 45 years. He represented governments, multinational corporations, manufacturers and investors in international arbitrations, courtroom litigation and transactional negotiations. His work involved many multinational disputes concerning intellectual property issues, antitrust/competition law, international infrastructure contract disputes, cross-border corporate acquisitions and governance, international joint ventures, and bankruptcy reorganizations. Mr. Agusti has authored articles for the Harvard Law Review and other legal publications, is a frequent speaker at professional seminars around the world, and regularly comments on legal issues on camera for Univisi�n, Telemundo and CNN en Espa�ol. Before commencing his practice at Steptoe, Mr. Agusti was a law clerk on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit and received his law degree from Harvard Law School, where he was a senior editor of the Harvard Law Review. Lucien J. Dhooge has been a teacher and scholar of business law since 1986 and most recently served as the Sue and John Staton Professor of Law at the Scheller College of Business at Georgia Institute of Technology until his retirement in June 2023. Professor Dhooge continues to teach business law in retirement on behalf of the University of Washington and Seattle University. Professor Dhooge was designated as the outstanding junior business law faculty member in the United States by the Academy of Legal Studies in Business in 2002 and received the Kay Duffy Award for outstanding service in 2005. He received the Academy�s Distinguished Career Faculty Award in 2019. Professor Dhooge is a past president of the Academy and past editor-in-chief of the American Business Law Journal and the Journal of Legal Studies Education.
