Hardcover. 406pp. Published 1638. Contemporary calf. Neatly re-hinged, a very good copy. The letters were originally published, in French, in 1624 and met with an extraordinary reception for their eloquence. Such was his reputation that any man who wished to be deemed a man of wit and letters wrote to him for the sole purpose of obtaining a reply. Sometimes he would need to reply to fifty or more at a time, a task which caused him much harassment. In the opinion of Voltaire he was the first person to give harmony and number to French prose. Hardback. Published 1684. 'Translated into English according to His Majesty's Command, by Mr Dryden.' Full contemporary calf, raised bands, red title-label. Lightly rubbed but a very good copy. Engraved frontspiece. Inner margin of title marked but not touching the text. According to Lowndes, this translation was made, not as Johnson later stated with the hopes of promoting popery but to strengthen the hands of government and to discredit the party who had acted with Lord Shaftesbury.
