McDaniel, PhD, is the Dr. Laurie Sands Distinguished Professor of Families & Health, the director of the Institute for the Family in the Department of Psychiatry, and the associate chair of the Department of Family Medicine at the University of Rochester Medical Center in Rochester, New York. She is the author of 12 books, among them with Jeri Hepworth and William Doherty, Medical Family Therapy and The Shared Experience of Illness, and with other coauthors Primary Care Psychology and Individuals, Families, and the New Genetics. She is a past editor of the journal, Families, Systems & Health, and currently associate editor of American Psychologist.
