He was Dean at EDI 1993-2008, gaining the Queen's Award for Higher and Further Education - the first in dentistry. His book Medical Problems in Dentistry was awarded the Doody Prize; and Oral and Maxillofacial Medicine won the Society of Authors Prize. He has received the CBE, University of Helsinki Medal of Honour, University of Santiago de Compostela Medal, Fellowship of UCL and honorary degrees from the Universities of Athens, Granada and Pretoria. Athanasios Kalantzis studied dentistry in Athens and became a scholar for postgraduate studies of the Institution of National Scholarships of Greece. He studied Medicine in Sheffield, UK and is a member of the Faculty of Dental Surgery of the Royal College of Surgeons of England, the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, and of the European Association of Cranio-Maxillo-Facial Surgeons. He is Fellow in Training of the International Academy of Oral Oncology. His clinical experience includes posts in General Dental Practice, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Oral Pathology General Surgery, Trauma and Orthopaedics and Intensive Care amongst others. He has published research and literature review papers in peer reviewed journals. He has taught junior oral & maxillofacial trainees for several years both informally and formally as demonstrator and lecturer.
