No country can rival the sheer diversity of intelligence organizations that Germany has experienced over the past 300 years. Given its pivotal geographical and political position in Europe, Germany was a magnet for foreign intelligence operatives, especially during the Cold War. As a result of this, it is no wonder that during certain periods of history Germany was probably busier spying on its own citizens than on its enemies. Because of the Gestapo and the SS of Nazi Germany to the Stasi of the German Democratic Republic, the fear of domestic abuse by security agencies with police powers runs far deeper in German society than elsewhere in the West. The Historical Dictionary of German Intelligence presents the turbulent history of German intelligence through a chronology, a bibliography, and hundreds of cross-referenced dictionary entries on the agencies and agents, the operations and equipment, the tradecraft and jargon, and many of the countries involved. No military reference collection is complete without it.

Reviews for Historical Dictionary of German Intelligence
The Historical Dictionary series on intelligence services is intended to provide a single reference that covers the missions, personnel, operations, organizations, and technical terms that define the services of various countries. In this volume Jefferson Adams, professor of history and international relations at Sarah Lawrence College, has done just that in exemplary fashion....There is no doubt that Professor Adams has produced a major contribution to the literature of intelligence.
Studies In Intelligence, March 2010
Jefferson Adams's addition to the series of dictionaries on intelligence and counterintelligence published by The Scarecrow Press is a valuable resource and narrative of the complex history of German intelligence....This book is the best resource in English....This book is invaluable for scholars and practitioners dealing with Germany.
American Council On Germany Newsletter
Gleaning solid information is the business of intelligence operatives; rarely, however, do they make it readily available to scholars. The publication of the Historical Dictionary of German Intelligence, therefore, is a boon to the specialist in German history who happens to be a non-specialist in intelligence, or vice versa. It is also an excellent resource for students working on projects where those two fields intersect.
H-Net: Humanities and Social Science Reviews Online
Jefferson Adams is a worthy individual to undertake the massive task of explaining agencies, individuals, and operations.
American Reference Books Annual
This well-informed book will serve to remind students and general readers of the machinations of spies and their master in one of the most significant countries of twentieth-century history.

Focusing on the intelligence issue the book indeed becomes an invaluable work to be a reference for not only scholars or pundits but also to many activists whom struggle to get balance of power domestically or internationally. The book is very useful for people of developing countries as a reference as well, including in Indonesia. To be honest most Indonesian pundits who I met agree that your thought-provoking book has been inspiring people, particularly in relation to those in fascinated topics.
