Montrose is a beautiful place, situated on the coast of Angus and possessing one of the best beaches in the east of Scotland. It has grown up around its harbour, in use for 900 years and was given a new lease of life by the North Sea oil industry. It currently combines a range of distinguished and impressive buildings both public and private with the charms of a seaside resort with golf courses, camping and caravanning. The town's motto translates as 'the sea enriches and the rose adorns', and this collection of old postcards and new images hopes to persuade the reader how true this is. Tom Valentine spent thirteen years as an electrical technician in the oil industry, working in both Libya and the North Sea. He has since changed career, and spent the past sixteen years involved in young people's care in the Montrose area.

About Tom Valentine
Tom Valentine's interest in vintage postcards began in the early 1970s when he visited a stamp fair in the Cafe Royal, Regent Street, while on holiday in London. There he found his first postcard of Montrose, of Rossie Castle, which caught his eye because the postmark was on the picture side of the card. He found a few more after that, including some of Ferryden, after which he was hooked on this new hobby and never looked back. Tom's full collecting areas are now the Scottish county of Angus, Libya and Malta, lighthouses and Scottish village churches. Postal history (collecting postmarks on letter and cards) is also another theme he collects, specialising in the county of Angus and various other places and countries. His original hobby of stamp collecting is now only third on his list! Tom is also the author of Montrose Through Time and currently lives in Friokheim in Angus, Scotland.
