When the Korean War broke out in 1950, the Marine Corps was ordered to deploy an air-ground brigade in less than ten days, even though no such brigade existed at the time. He received his Ph.D. in modern history from Oxford University and is Senior Research Fellow at the Institute for National Strategic Studies, National Defence University, and author of The Sling and the Stone: On War in the 21st Century.
