He has received awards from various national and international organizations such as the Asian Polymer Association, Association of Separation Scientists and Technologists, and Indian Thermal Analysis Society. His major research interests are in the area of novel nano- and bio-materials development for tissue engineering, bioprocessing, and environmental biotechnology.  Dr. J. S. Melo is a senior scientist at the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, India, where he heads the Enzyme and Microbial Technology Section of the Nuclear Agriculture & Biotechnology Division. His major research interest is in the field of applied enzymology with a special focus on designing heterogeneous biocatalysts for use in bioprocessing, biosensors, and bioremediation.
