Description for Book of the Year, 1873
Paperback. Kenneth Mason, 1972; 1st edn. trade paperback in laminated pictorial card cove rs, in mint condition; 112pp with day-by-day diary of the year's events, many illustrations. What world events was the man in the street talking about 100 years ago? Incredibly one subject was war in Vietnam. For it was in 1873 that the French invasion of the Red River Delta was launched and which eventually saw the temporary subjugation of what is now Vietnam. This is one of the fascinating facts revealed in Book of the Year 1873, a period in which Queen Victoria entered the 37th year of her reign and a time when Britain's stature stood high in the world. What else was happening at home and abroad a century ago? The defeated and exiled Emperor Louis Napoleon III died at Chislehurst and Queen Victoria visited the Empress Eugene there. The Shah of Persia's visit to England was the Royal event of the year. He was received in state by the Queen at Windsor Castle and attended a glittering state ball at Buckingham Palace. The year also saw the defeat of a tottering Gladstone government. The Prime Minister resigned after a set back in the Commons but had to 'soldier on' when Disraeli refused Queen Victoria's request to form a new administration. In 1873 Alexandra Palace was burnt to the ground a few weeks after being opened. In America General Grant entered his second term as President, and off Halifax the SS Atlantic went down with the loss of 700 lives. In South Wales 70,000 iron workers were on strike as employers demanded a 10 per cent wage cut. A century ago the Bank rate fluctuated from 4%% in June to 9% in November. The price of coal was 37s 1 d per ton, the Derby was won by Doncaster and the boat race by Cambridge. Book of the Year 1873 mirrors the life and times of a Victorian England and of a politically unstable Europe and a sometimes troubled Colonial Empire. With its detailed record of events, it is a valuable and interesting reference book. 8¼x5¾".
