Social critics, and especially feminist researchers, have long argued that science makes life difficult for society's weakest members. Many of the feminist critiques, particularly, have been based in epistemology. Sharyn Clough supports the intervention into science, but rejects the feminists' prevalent focus on epistemology in favor of a more empirical approach. Beyond Epistemology argues that the best way to discard sexist and racist science is to encourage more accurate data and methods. Using a case study from evolutionary biology, Clough shows how inadequate empirical philosophy is in creating real change in the sciences. Instead, she supports a more pragmatic approach based on the work of Richard Rorty and Donald Davidson. This work encourages Clough's fellow feminists to refocus their critiques and discard their philosophical debates about epistemology.

Reviews for Beyond Epistemology
Sharyn Clough’s Beyond Epistemology is an important intervention in feminist science studies and the philosophy of science more generally. Clough argues convincingly that the epistemological turn in feminist science studies has been self-defeating. Her pragmatist alternative constructively reclaims earlier feminist commitment to critical engagement with specific scientific projects.
Joseph Rouse, Wesleyan University Beyond Epistemology brings us tantalizing questions from an exciting new feminist philosopher.
Women's Review of Books
Beyond Epistemology is a bold intervention into the vigorous and quickly evolving debates that are shaping feminist philosophy of science. Clough’s analysis will surely generate much fruitful debate; it offers an articulation of the rationale that underpins some of the richest and most promising of empirically grounded feminist analyses of science.
Alison Wylie, University of Washington
