Wendell Bell, professor emeritus of sociology, Yale University A thoughtful companion to Anticipate the School You Want, Creating the School You Want brings together other leading futurists who argue for the many benefits of improving schools by futurizing K–12 education. Anticipate tells you how to do it; Creating expands the many reasons as to why it's a great idea whose time has come.
Michael Marien, founder and editor of Future Survey This book makes it clear that, unless we educate our young people to think critically and creatively about the future, we will have failed in our duty to them as educators. Shostak draws on a variety of writers to explore the importance of this key task in troubled times.
Dave Hicks, visiting professor, Bath Spa University, United Kingdom; author, Lessons for the Future In Shostak’s latest book, Creating the School You Want, we are invited to sit at the kitchen table and talk about the future with this wise and compelling horizon scanner. He invites other futurists to the conversation and we readers get that special treat of engaging with some of the finest thinkers about our future ever collected in one publication. We are urged to push ourselves out of our comfort zone and into new territory for educators. We need to get comfortable with shaping our future for our students, for our schools and for ourselves. Shostak provides a recipe book for doing just that. Bravo, Shostak, for this insightful and captivating work which encourages us to leap into the future with gusto.
Sarah Jerome Ed.D, superintendent of schools in Arlington Heights, Illinois; past president of American Association of School Administrators After detailing the long term inability of American public education to truly change itself, Shostak offers several practical and inspiring strategies for transforming our schools. He gives numerous compelling examples of why change is imperative for our students. Just when the reader is overwhelmed by the magnitude of change necessary, he applies the 'trim tabs' guiding educators into a realistic and achievable future. Brilliant!
Mary Alice Price, superintendent, Pittsford Central School District, 2009 NYS Superintendent of the Year Shostak offers a compelling argument for educational leaders to become intentional about making their organizations 'future-oriented.' His position is clear: If students are to succeed in the future, our learning environment must be future-focused, imaginative in pedagogy, and engage everyone. He provides practical steps for those ready to take on the challenge.
David J. Kroeze, superintendent of schools, Northbrook School District 27, Illinois At a time when our country is questioning the efficacy of the economics of schooling, Arthur Shostak brings us an imperative that we cannot dismiss. Shostak's collection of contributed chapters bridges the youth culture to a learning culture with a focus on investing in future-driven results. Creativity is the priority in his presentation of the cyber movement, and this book offers concrete examples of where schools, teachers, and students can begin locally to conceptualize the future. This book is a must-read as communities look to make decisions about their schools. Shostak is proactive and thought-provoking. Where his previous book gave us the rationale to shape the future of education, this book challenges us to act and offers everyone who cares about education abundant examples, ideas, and inspiration.
Debra Jackson, superintendent of schools, Highland Falls, Fort Montgomery CSD An engaging overview of education and the ways in which it might develop during our lifetimes. Teachers, parents, school administrators, and anyone else who plays a role in today's school systems might enjoy it.
The Futurist, September 2010
Educational futuristics (also known as futurology or long-range forecasting) promotes the use of a distinctive set of methods, such as extrapolations, scenarios, and trend analysis, within the framework of an optimistic philosophical approach: the future is largely ours to make. In this follow-up to the author's 2008 book, Anticipate the School You Want: Futurizing K-12 Education, educators, professional futurists, and even a high school student explore the relevance of educational futuristics. They describe mechanisms for implementing educational futuristics, and suggest ways of promoting the adoption and delivery of educational futuristics at the classroom, building, and federal level. This book describes programmatic ideas that go beyond those mentioned in the 2008 book, related to distance learning and videoconferencing, using futuristic scenario-writing exercises with students, and the greening of education.
