Founded in 1931 with a collection donated by Mr and Mrs William Henry Singer, Junior, the collection has grown significantly, and now includes over 6,000 objects, ranging from Old Masters to 20th-century art, the emphasis being on American art from the last two centuries. This highly illustrated book reveals the Museum's strengths and variety. An essay by Joseph Ruzicka about the history of the Museum is followed by an essay by Alan Fern on the history of museums in the United States.
