Hilary Davies was born in London of Anglo-Welsh parents. A Hawthornden fellow, Hilary Davies won the prestigious Eric Gregory Award for Young Poets and first prize in the Cheltenham/TLS poetry competition, and co-edited the poetry magazine Argo for ten years.
