It provides concise, informative and fascinating descriptions of prominent men and women. The subjects come from all walks of life - from premiers, generals and bishops, through artists, actors and authors, farmers, engineers and schoolteachers, to prostitutes, thieves and murderers - providing a cross-section of Australian society. This supplementary volume contains 504 articles, written by 399 authors. Subjects include the familiar, such as castaway Eliza Fraser and apple-grower Maria (Granny) Smith; the notorious, such as New Guardsman Francis De Groot and bushranger Dan Morgan; and the unfamiliar, including the surgeon Tharp Mountain Girdlestone. This supplementary volume fills in the missing entries in previous volumes (Volumes 1-16). The series so far goes from 1799-1980.
