Hardback. 8vo. Original cloth stained. Irish Literature. George A. Birmingham is the pseudonym of James Owen Hannay. He was born on July 16, 1865, in Belfast, the capital of Northern Ireland. Today the house where he was born is a part of the administration building of the Queen’s University of Belfast. It is located on University Road across from the university. On the wall of the house there is a memorial plate which says, “James O. Hannay, George A. Birmingham, Novelist, 1865-1950, Born in this House, July 16”. Behind the tree on the left is the house where Birmingham was born. (Belfast)A memorial plate dedicated to Birmingham (Belfast) At the time when Birmingham was born, the whole island of Ireland was under British rule and there had been a long-lasting conflict between those who claimed that Ireland should stay in Britain and those who insisted Ireland should be free from Britain. Most of the pro-British were immigrants from Britain and their descendants. They were mainly Protestants and called Unionists. On the other hand, most of the pro-Irish had their origins in Ireland. They were mainly Catholics and called Nationalists. Birmingham’s parents were of British origin. His paternal grandfather had immigrated from Scotland to Northern Ireland and married a local woman whose parents also had come from Scotland. They settled themselves in the suburbs of Bushmills, which is famous for whiskey. Birmingham’s father, Robert Hannay (1835-1894), was born there. Later he moved to live in Belfast and gave services as a Church of Ireland clergyman in St. Anne’s Church, today’s St. Anne’s Cathedral, which is located near the city center.

190pp. Bog/Paperback. Agus muintir thuaisceart na hÉireann ag fáil réidh le cuid mhaith de mhallacht an ama atá caite, ní thig leis na pearsana sna scéalta seo gach aon ghné di a chur díobh. Téann siad i ngleic le gháthdhúshláin an tsaoil i gcónaí, cé go bhfuil taibhsí ag siúl ina measc. Sochaí chasta chontráilte an toradh, nach leor ceann ar bith de na hinsintí simplí ó aon taobh le cur síos uirthi. Tarraingítear pictiúir ildaite den tírdhreach seo – an greann chomh maith leis an ghruaim - sa chnuasach cumhachtach seo ó dhuine de na gearrscéalaithe is spéisiúla atá ag scríobh I nGaeilge. This book draws a colourful picture of society in Northern Ireland with personal stories about getting rid of the curse of recent history and past ghosts

Hardback. Large 8vo. ..An imprint of George Macy Companies, Ltd., Heritage Press was founded in 1935. The Press printed more affordable classic volumes that were previously published by Macy’s Limited Editions Club and covered a broad range of topics primarily within the Western canon. In addition to Macy, directors of the Heritage Press included Cedric Crowell, General Manager of the Doubleday Bookshops; Frank L. Magel, head of Putnam Bookstores in New York; and A. Koch, head of Brentano Stores in New York. Though many of Macy’s other imprints, including The Heritage Club, The Heritage Illustrated Bookshelf, and The Junior Heritage Club, were sold by subscription only, Heritage Press editions were sold through bookstores. Macy combined his publishing enterprises in 1944, though each imprint maintained its specific target audience. The archives of the George Macy Companies, including both the Limited Editions Club and The Heritage Press, were purchased by the Ransom Center in 1970.

Paperback. Offers a glimpse of Mark Twain's creative process on what many critics consider the finest fiction of his later years. While the work was begun in 1897 and revised first in 1902 and then in 1908, the third version was the only manuscript titled "The Mysterious Stranger". These texts provide an opportunity to observe Mark Twain's literary struggle. Editor(s): Gibson, William M. Num Pages: 493 pages. BIC Classification: 1KBB; 2AB; DSBF; DSK.
