Dr. Andrew Schmitz is an award-winning expert in the areas of international trade, marketing and agricultural policy. He has served as a consultant to the U.S. Tarfiff Commission, U.S. Departments of Agriculture and Transportation. Central Intelligence Agency, Canada Agriculture, Canadian Wheat Board, International Food Policy Research Institute and numerous other government institutions. He was previously chairman and Robinson Chair professor in the Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics at the University of California at Berkeley, where he had been on the faculty since 1968 except while in residence at the University of Saskatchewan (1974, 1982-3, 1968-88). He was also an adjunct professor and the first to hold the Van Villet Endowed Chair in the Department of Agricultural Economics at the University of Saskatchewan. He has published widely in the U.S. and foreign professional journals and has co-authored, edited and contributed to dozens of books. Born and raised on a wheat farm in Canada, Dr. Schmitz earned his B.S.A. in 1963 and M.Sc. in 1964 in agricultural economics at the University of Saskatchewan. He was awarded the 1964 Master's Thesis Award for the best thesis in agricultural economics in Canada. He pursued his graduate career in economics at the University of Wisconsin, specialising in international trade, and earned an M.A. degree in 1966 and a Ph.D. degree in 1968. His Ph.D. thesis won the University of Wisconsin's Harold Groves Doctoral Dissertation Award in 1968. The Ben Hill Griffin, Jr. Chair in Agricultural Economics Marketing was established in April 1983 in the Food and Resource Economics Department through a $600,000 gift from the late Ben Hill Griffin, Jr. and a matching grant of $400,000 from Florida's Eminent Scholar Trust Fund.
