Porter was sent to Damascus in 1849 by the Irish Presbyterian Church as a missionary to the Jews, and over the next ten years he travelled extensively throughout Syria and Palestine. He revisted the country in the 1860's. In the present work he argued that the massive buildings, whose ruins are found in Bashan, were constructed by the aboriginal inhabitants long before the occupation by Jewish tribes
